The time I previously spent weighing myself on my home scales was rather excessive . By being educated by Lee and Mark on what matters has stopped the daily weigh in and emotional connection I had with a number. I have realised that less time on the scales is less time worrying, more time concentrating on what matters and more time fitting into smaller clothes. 8 pounds of fat off and 8 cm off my hips in 5 weeks has proven this. After a few years of chronic injuries, osteoarthritis and 2 operations, I had been working by myself to get fitter with only limited results.
Finding a qualified and experienced personal trainer can be difficult, my gym has lots of glossy ads making extravagant claims for its trainers but I wasn’t convinced that they were up to the job from what I saw when I was working out there. I also knew I would be well outside my comfort zone doing personal training sessions.
Having personal training sessions with Mark at Bodymotiv8 has felt absolutely right from the very first session. I have enjoyed the wide variety of exercise techniques he uses, his knowledge and enthusiasm have motivated me and kept me on track. My weight loss has continued and I am now exercising at a higher intensity than I thought possible.
It was important to me to learn the correct the correct exercise technique both to get results and to avoid injuries and Mark always explains in detail and demonstrates each exercise to make sure I get it right. I have been exercising at a more intense level for a few months now without any injuries holding me back.
Also as Bodymotiv8 is a private gym, the personal training sessions are more structured and intense because we are not having to wait to use gym equipment or compete with other gym users.
It might seem like a luxury to have PT sessions but I would not have improved my fitness to my current level just muddling along by myself at the gym. I recommend personal training at Bodymotiv8 highly.

I broke my leg and ankle in seven places in a snowboarding accident in January 2010 and met Lee Spendiff to help with my recovery.
The consultant at Ninewells Hospital painted a bleak picture of a slow, difficult recovery. I was told that I would still be using at least one crutch at the end of 2010 and to refrain from beginning physiotherapy treatment until then. However, I decided to return to training in June 2010 and it is the best thing I have ever done.
It was very hard work. Lee made me lift weights I couldn’t manage before the accident and encouraged me when I felt low and in pain. Even though I had a lot of work in the gym over the next twelve months, I can honestly say that Lee performed a miracle with my recovery and would encourage anybody with broken bones to have a consultation with him.
The consultant nearly fell off his chair when I cycled to Ninewells Hospital from Broughty Ferry in September 2010! I now realise that if you are willing to work hard in the gym, with the correct supervision, anything is possible!

I met Lee for the first time for Sports Therapy on a wrist injury, due to an accident at work. It was weak, painful and had limited movement, despite the operation I underwent. With a course of treatment which encompassed exercise, massage and ultrasound, I have experienced an enormous improvement. I will never have full mobility of the wrist; however I now have less pain and more flexibility, which allows me to complete everyday tasks that I was previously struggling with. I have continued to see Lee for treatment of other injuries I have gained, due to being accident prone! I have always found him very knowledgeable and professional in his role.
I began having personal training sessions with Lee one year ago and he has helped me to improve my fitness levels. I have noticed dramatic changes in my body, helping me to feel happier and more comfortable with myself. He is always happy to answer my questions, no matter how silly, gives me solid nutritional advice and makes experience working out enjoyable.
When Lee told me he was starting a boot camp, I was, of course, keen to join. Lee was recommended to me by several fellow runners, who gave glowing reports of his services. I started seeing Lee for regular Sports Massage treatment as part of my preparation for an ultra-marathon in France. I had always felt quite sore and stiff after ultra-marathons, however since undertaking regular treatment this stiffness is mild and my niggles during the race (tight glutes, shoulder and hamstrings), post-run ache and sore feet have gone. There is no doubt in my mind that seeing Lee enabled me to compete well, with no niggles, in a 22 hour run in France, Italy and the Swiss Alps, and allowed me to walk normally in two days. I have just completed a block of ten weekly sessions with Lee. In that time, with his support, I have lost one stone and gained an enormous amount of confidence in my physical ability.
After several years of no regular exercise, I was fat, frumpy and incredibly moody. Lee’s nutrition advice has helped me say goodbye to high fat food cravings and being accountable to him keeps me on track. I can’t believe the difference in my strength levels, with statistics to prove that I have turned fat into muscle (Lee uses special equipment to measure this, which means I get a bit of a rest!) After six years of running regularly, I was struck down by my first sports injury, and with four weeks until my first marathon it couldn’t have been worse timing. I had shooting pains in my feet which made it very difficult to continue running. Lee Spendiff was recommended to me by a friend and I was impressed by how quickly he diagnosed the problem. The injury was not to my feet but my calf muscles, which after four months of marathon training were extremely tight and full of scar tissue. Lee measured the flexibility of the affected muscles and treated my calves with Sports Massage. He also gave me stretching exercises to do at home and after a couple of weeks, I was back to normal.
With Lee’s help, I ran my first marathon pain-free. In addition, he showed me how to warm up properly before running and recommended stomach and iliotibial band strengthening exercises, which will improve my running in the future. I was fast approaching 50 as a fat, unfit lump of lard! Having moved from academia into the pharmaceutical industry in recent years, I was wearing the excesses of my corporate lifestyle around my waistline and felt deeply unhappy. I contacted Lee via his website and asked for help for my husband and I. Until I met Lee, I believed that Bodymotiv8 would probably be, yet another, failed attempt to get our health and fitness under control. However, Lee is an amazing person and when I met him, I felt that this experience would be different. He is extremely knowledgeable, calm, reassuring and was totally non-judgemental of my husband and I.
Lee gave me a full body analysis and the results were shocking. I had 42% body fat, weighed 77.6kg, had a BMI of 32, a waist circumference of 106cm, hypertension and, to top it off, I was dehydrated!

I have lost 6kg, including 20cm from my waist, and my fitness levels are higher than they have ever been. He has designed a programme to target the body parts I am concerned with and leave me with the curves I want to keep!

As a 53 year old male with 36 years of pen pushing behind me and no regular exercise for 20 years, my health profile was less than ideal. I was two stone overweight, suffered from high blood pressure and climbing three flights of stairs would leave me gasping for breath. I am a runner, occasional triathlete, adventure racer and all-round glutton for punishment, as well as being a hospital doctor in my spare time! I am 62 years old and recently retired, having spent many years sitting in front of a computer at work. I am not actively involved with a sport (I watch the Olympic Games every four years) and not especially overweight, although recently I have gained more of a bloke’s belly! I am relatively healthy, with average fitness levels for my age, but have suffered from a frozen shoulder for a couple of years.
My wife Carol wanted to improve her health and fitness with a Personal Trainer, so I was dragged along, reluctantly, to provide moral support. She thought it would help us to stay healthy and make the most of my retirement. After a fitness assessment, I learned I am stiffer than average (off the bottom of the scale to be honest!) but fairly strong (must be all the curries I have picked up over the years!).
After the assessment, my next session was at the gym with Lee, with the potential to be intimidating because I had never been to a gym before. Lee put me through a variety of exercises and provided lots of guidance and encouragement at each stage.
I now have approximately one session per week and am impressed by how many different exercises Lee has in his repertoire. This helps to make my training sessions interesting and enjoyable. As the weeks have passed, I have been feeling fitter and stronger, and return from the sessions feeling motivated to continue with exercises at home. The more I exercise, the more physical activity I can do. I find it mentally stimulating and wish I had started training with Lee years ago. I would never have been motivated to go to the gym by myself and exercise effectively without his guidance. Having a frozen shoulder means some exercises are difficult, as I have a limited range of movement, but Lee works around my limits and gives me special exercises to improve the area. I am a 36-year-old woman who started going to the gym, albeit reluctantly. I had back pain which no specialist could cure, so a friend recommended Lee Spendiff to me. I started attending Sports Therapy treatment and after a few sessions, the pain was gone. I asked Lee about Personal Training and whether he thought he could get me in shape. Approximately ten years ago, I injured my shoulder at work and was in a car accident shortly afterwards, causing a bad whiplash injury. Since then I have suffered from chronic neck and shoulder pain, which has been virtually impossible to get rid of. I’m only 30-years-old and because I’m a nurse, even a small flare up of my symptoms makes working painful and difficult. I have tried most treatments; reflexology, physiotherapy, reiki, osteopathy, heat and cold therapy, and of course painkillers, however massage is the most effective. I was introduced to Lee Spendiff a few months ago by a fitness instructor. I have flat feet and this has devolved to my experiencing poor mobility, chronic pain and swelling of my ankle and knee joints. I didn’t know there was anything wrong with me. Then one morning when I woke up, my back and neck just froze. For three weeks I was looking to the left, whether I wanted to or not. It was a nightmare. Not only was it incredibly painful but even simple things like opening a door were a puzzle I had to think through in detail. Should I pull with one hand, block it with the cup of tea I was carrying (consequently burning myself and twisting my shoulder) or kick it open, Karate Kid style, with my right foot while facing in the opposite direction and run through it backwards?
My doctor referred me to a physiotherapist who gave me advice like ‘keep warm’ and ‘sort out your workstation’ before he decided I did not require further treatment. A few weeks later, I tried to start exercising at the gym again. Within five minutes I was sitting on the steps outside the class, in tears, with shooting pains in my back, neck and head. That was when I met Lee.
He told me it would be a slow process, and it was. Lee started my treatment with a programme of massage and stretching exercises. The results were immediate. My headaches vanished overnight and I got a full night’s sleep for the first time in months. My mobility increased and I was able to drive, without a fear of parking in small spaces!
Lee has created an exercise programme for me and it is a relief to work through it without worrying that I will aggravate the injury and cause more pain. My latest programme focuses on mobility, and strengthening and stretching exercises for the injured area. For the first time in months I can push myself at the gym and see results. A couple more months of this and I will be in the best shape I have ever been. Nice one!

Lee highlighted problems with my posture which I had blamed on ‘the way I am made’. He emphasised that if I didn’t address them, I would experience major issues with my back in later life. The exercises I had been undertaking at the gym were actually making the problems worse.
